About Sofia
Sofia is the capital and the biggest city of Bulgaria. It is situated in the north-western part of the country, next to the northern slope of Vitosha Mountain, at an altitude of 550 metres. Few small rivers run through the city and Iskar River passes near the east residential districts. There are15 mineral and thermal springs situated in the proximity of the city. During the last 60 years were built artificial lakes and dam lakes. Sofia is the main administrative, industrial, transport, culture and university centre of the country. It bears the name of the former cathedral of the city called St. Sofia meaning “wisdom” in Greek language. Sofia has been the capital of Bulgaria for 127 years. It is  the centre of the Metropolitan Municipality, the Region of Sofia and the Region of Sofia-City.
